The Blessings from Balaam
Inspired from Numbers chapters 22-23
The king of Moab brought him out
of the eastern hills
Bringing him out to curse Jacob
with his divination skills
But how can he condemn
whom God has not condemned
Seeing them from the cliff tops
are the people God defends
They live by themselves
set apart from other nations
Constantly blessed by God
from generation to generation
Who can count Jacob's descendants
so vast and numerous
If only our lives could be like theirs
dying as the righteous
Rise up Balak and listen
Hear him, son of Zippor
God is not a human
He does not reconsider
God has chosen to bless
and Balaam could not reverse it
No misfortune was in His plan
as His people were chosen to worship
Proclaiming God as their king
Who brought them out of Egypt
Their enemy’s blood they’ll be drinking
as if they’ve won the conflict
How beautiful are their tents
how lovely are their homes
They’re like gardens by the riverside
spreading out like palm groves
Water will flow from their buckets
their offspring have all they need
Their king will be the greatest
everything he does will succeed
Balaam saw him, in the far future
perceiving him, but not there and then
From Israel will emerge a scepter
like a rising star, the king over men
His enemies will be conquered
while Israel marches on triumphant
In victory will this ruler be honored
as his people are spared God’s judgment
