Being Purified

Inspired by Leviticus 11-15 & Matthew Henry’s Commentary

God told Moses to test the people’s obedience
Instructing them not to eat certain ingredients
What animals to eat did He restrict
To make the people holy and distinct

To differentiate what is clean from impure
So that their obedience can be better secured
Because of man’s original perversity
The next generation inherits depravity

Mothers give birth with apprehension
As the child is born into transgression
Growing up as their defilement increases
But God does not curse us with human diseases

We simply choose to live in perversion
So God’s delegates inspect the filthy person
And if found unclean that person is cut off
Making communion with God be completely shut off

So sacrifice one bird
and dip another in its blood
Redeem the unclean out from the mud
Let the blood-stained bird fly and ascend
From uncleanliness to purified may we transcend

As blood is the life force of every living creature
Innocent shedding of it makes us a wrongdoer
Yet its evil-cleansing power is a blessed feature
Drawing us closer to God and knowing Him deeper

From dirty things we need to stay separated
Our blessedness can be easily penetrated
To the pure and holy we must be dedicated
So our familiarity with God can be celebrated
